Our Favorite Porsches On Ebay This Week: Volume 41

We’ve been compiling the best Porsche models on eBay for about a year and a half now, and we’ve seen some pretty astonishing cars pop up now and again. There is some great new stuff every two weeks, so check back often. We’ve tracked down five more exciting Porsches for you nice people to purchase today, including a hot-rodded 912, a 356 with a sunroof, a Porsche with a V8 it shouldn’t have, a Porsche with a V8 it should have, and an inexpensive Cayman that, ahem, needs some work. Some of these cars could be great collection investments, while others might prove to do more financial harm than good.

1. 1966 Porsche 912 Hot Rod W/ 2.2 Liter 911T Engine For Sale

This 912 chassis has been converted into a bit of a hot rod with addition of 2.2 liter 911T power, a fresh 901 5-speed, wider wheels and tires, and lots of lightweight panels. Throw in a nice rollover bar, and eye-searing paint, and you’ve got a great little rocker to take to the streets. The 912 has had fenders and quarter panels with SC flares fitted in order to fit larger 8″ and 9″ wide Fuchs. The hood, engine lid, and bumpers are crafted of fiber reinforced plastic (fiberglass) to cut weight, and 911R-style rear lid hinges are employed to give the car a nice racy appearance.

The 912 is being sold by championship winning Dick Barbour Performance in Georgia, so chances are this is a well built and well taken care of motor.

2. 1959 Porsche 356A Sunroof Coupe For Sale

There were very few 356 coupes built with a sunroof added, nobody really knows how many, but the number is definitely quite low, especially in the 1950s. This gorgeous Silver over Red coupe would be an excellent addition to any garage, assuming you’ve got the exorbitant sum demanded by the seller to add it to your garage, that is. The car is said to be original, including the engine and gearbox, as ratified by the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. A recent restoration has been carried out, including an engine overhaul, all mechanicals (whatever that means… Brakes? Transmission? Linkages?), and a respray in original color. The detail level of the restoration appears quite high from the photos provided, but there could be a lot hidden here, so buyer beware. At two-hundred thousand US dollars for a coupe, though, I’d expect it to be awfully damn good!

3. 1972 Porsche 914 Outlaw V8 For Sale

V8 914s are actually fairly common. I’m not sure why, but there are a lot of people out there who are willing to defile a light and lithe 914 with a heavy cast-iron Chevrolet V8. This swap, however, is not one of those. This car makes use of an all-aluminum Buick 215 V8, which doesn’t really add that much weight to the car, and certainly ups the power level by quite a bit, and the torque by a number you wouldn’t even fathom. Judging by the parts list, the builder spared very few expenses, and this should be a ripping good time for anyone so-inclined. I’d love to drive it, but I’m not so sure I’d love to own it. The case, however, could easily be made for such a car. I’ve got to say, I love the flares, and I really love the color. Very close to perfect, in appearance, at least.

4. 1979 Porsche 928 GT Non-Sunroof Coupe For Sale

This 928 isn’t perfect, though few are, but with some work, it could be an amazing cruiser. I’m not sure that it would ever make anyone any money, but it would certainly have the potential to make its new owner very happy. Unlike most 928s in this price range, this car is said to be ‘running very well’. It is, however, in cosmetic disrepair, as it needs a new dash, new seats (or at least recovered ones), a windshield replacement, and definitely a repaint in the original Petrol Blue color.

The reason this car appealed to me personally were the car’s original paint color of Petroleum Blau, and the fact that this is a non-sunroof car. This hard-top 928 is a pretty rare bird, and for only a few thousand dollars and some patience, this could be an amazing touring driver for the mechanically inclined. I’m almost considering it for myself, but I don’t have time for a second or third project car. Who is going to take this one on?

5. 2014 Porsche Cayman 2.7 PDK Salvage Car For Sale

This is a very interesting listing. First, because it is an almost-new Cayman with only 13,000 miles on it for sale at a buy-it-now price of just $26,900. Second, because the car has the worlds most strange choice of tires for a base Cayman. Those are Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo R tires, a very sticky 60-treadwear rated racing tire that run over $500 each… On the front. On the back of the car is a mis-matched Pirelli P-Zero high-performance summer street tire with a 220-treadwear rating. I cannot fathom why someone would mis-match their tires like this, aside from a lack of knowledge or a lack of planning. This would make for a car that is much more oversteer sensitive than a standard Cayman, and likely explains why the car was wrecked in the first place.

Get yourself some carbon fiber panels and an aftermarket bumper, crudely match the paint, get a matching set of Trofeo Rs for the rear of the car, strip it out, and have yourself a nicely priced track-rat Cayman. The 2.7 engine makes a great sound, and it’ll make you actually have to work for a good lap time. If you’re new to track work, this could be a great learning tool. Any skills you learn in a lower-powered car will translate to higher powered cars, but if you start out in a high-powered car, you could be masking your mistakes with the car’s ability to go fast in a straight line. Again, if you’re bodywork inclined, you could make this work for a lot less than any body shop would charge you. It appears to be mechanically intact, it just needs some panels and some paint.
