Earlier this week, we showed you a bunch of track-ready Porsche 997 GT3 Cup cars for sale that are fast enough to peel back the eyelids of most drivers. Today, though, we’re showcasing a potential track toy that is just to the left of insanity, and far beyond the capabilities of ‘normal folk’. The good folks at Canepa Design have this perfect Porsche RS Spyder LMP2 for sale, and if your driving abilities are near-super-human, then this might just be the car for you! In the right hands, this is a car more than capable of setting fast lap of the day at pretty much any vintage racing event, anywhere in the world. Assuming custodianship of a Porsche like this comes with an almost guaranteed entry to events as prestigious as the Monterey Historics, and would be more than welcome at Road Atlanta’s Walter Mitty Challenge.
Having joined the racing world in 2007, and competitively raced through 2010, this chassis had been near the sharp end of the grid for about twice as long as most racing chassis entire lifecycle. Porsche’s RS Spyder was a mighty performer, taking on other factory efforts from Audi, Peugeot, Honda/Acura, and Mazda and winning more often than not. Having been campaigned by two top-tier teams in its North American career (Dyson Racing and Muscle Milk Team Cytosport/Greg Pickett Racing), this Porsche RS Spyder is no slouch, and certainly no stranger to victory lane.
The car proved successful fresh out of the box at its very first outing, the pre-season Sebring test in 2007, where it took fastest overall time of the weekend. Those winning ways continued all the way through the end of the 2010 ALMS season, where Greg Pickett and Klaus Graf took the car to victory at Lime Rock Park. A perfect bookend to a life in the American Le Mans Series. Since 9R6-704’s retirement from the sport, the car has been shown off at a number of significant vintage racing events, including Rennsport Reunion IV, and I even saw it floating around the paddock at the Monterey Historics last year.
No price is listed, but if you have to ask, can you really afford it? Running costs of a car like this are surely astronomical, a significant quantity above that of, say, a 997 GT3 RSR, for certain. In order to run a car like this, you’d need to secure a tire supply from Michelin, and you’ll likely need a crew of laptop-toting engineers just to get the thing fired up, but let’s face facts, it’s probably worth it, right? With this car, you’ve got one of the most competitive LMP chassis of the last decade, you’ve got a lot of provenance and history, and you’d sure be the hit of the paddock! If I may ask one thing of the Porsche community, please don’t let this car fade into the obscurity of a private collection, never to be driven again. This is a racing car that deserves to be taken out and exercised regularly!

2007 Porsche RS Spyder
Chassis: 9R6-704Here is a very rare opportunity to own a unique piece of Porsche racing history. The RS Spyder is legendary for winning the ALMS LMP2 Championship in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and for taking class honors at Le Mans in 2008 and 2009. 11 complete Porsche RS Spyders were built from 2005 to 2010. The Porsche factory museum has only 2 in their collection, and 8 are believed to be in private hands in the USA.
9R6-704 ran in four very competitive seasons from 2007 to 2010. It started with Dyson Racing, and would run 25 races with them from 2007-2008 with 5 podium finishes, including a second overall at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2008 with Marino Franchitti, Butch Leitzinger, and Andy Lally driving. From 2009 to 2010 the car would be campaigned by Greg Pickett, and his Muscle Milk Team Cytosport.
The team would take 9R6-704 to eight podium finishes, including a first in class at Sebring in 2010, and an overall win at Lime Rock later that year. This car has been fully cosmetically restored, and the corners sorted. It is fitted with the engine, transmission, and suspension that were in the car for its first in class finish at Sebring in 2010.
9R6-704 is ready to return to the racetrack, and currently sits in its Muscle Milk livery as run at Sebring in 2010.
