Porsche Prepares For Macan Production Start-up

For the past two years, Porsche has been preparing their Leipzig plant for production of the sporty Macan SUV, and next Tuesday, February 11th, that production will commence. Over 500 million euros were invested in updating the facility, which was first built in 2002 for Cayenne production, and absorbed Panamera production in 2007. Previously only a final assembly facility, Leipzig has been transformed into a full-fledged automobile manufacturing facility, including the addition of body panel stamping and paint departments.

With the updates to the Saxon region plant, Porsche has added somewhere near 1500 new jobs within their organization. Additionally, neighboring supplier facilities have also added a number of jobs in response to the increased demand the Macan will place on them. As a result, Porsche continues to be a vital driver of economic growth in the eastern German marketplace.

As part of the production launch celebrations, the German Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, Sigmar Gabriel, the Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich, as well as the Lord Mayor of the City of Leipzig, Burkhard Jung, have been extended invitiations, to which they have already accepted. Also participating from Volkswagen Group are the Chairman of the Supervisory Board Dr. Ferdinand K. Piëch, the Chairman of the Board of Management Dr. Martin Winterkorn and the Chairman of the Group Works Council Bernd Osterloh. Porsche AG is represented by the Chairman of the Supervisory Board Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, the Chairman of the General Works Council Uwe Hück as well as all board members and many employee representatives.

Porsche AG Chairman, Matthias Müller –

“Our decision to develop the new Macan in Baden-Württemberg and produce it in Saxony means we have pledged ourselves once again to Germany as an industrial location and to the Porsche quality seal of ‘Engineered and made in Germany.’ In addition [to the Cayenne], the Panamera has been rolling off the assembly line since 2009 – a car as well as the Cayenne that likewise set a new benchmark in its segment. With the Macan, coming next is a super sports car among the SUVs, which has already generated great demand prior to its market launch on April 5.”
