Attention 914-6 Owners: New Heat Exchangers Are Available Again!

For decades now, people restoring Porsche’s awesome 914-6 have been without a lot of options when it comes to replacing rotted out heat exchangers. The 914-6 heat exchangers are an interesting design, using what amounts to an equal length header system winding through a stamped steel covering to provide heat for the car. Unfortunately, German steel of the 1970s was not exactly the best material, and rotted away, even in the best of locales and under scrutinizing eyes. Sometimes, your 914-6 heating system would develop pinhole rust leaks between the heat casing and the exhaust tubing, causing your heat system to blow spent exhaust gases throughout the cabin. That’s never a good thing.

Help is here! Dansk, a Danish sheet metal and exhaust production company, and Stoddard NLA, a Cleveland, Ohio based Porsche parts retailer, have worked together to launch a new reproduction set of heat exchangers that look and sound every bit like their original counterparts. The key difference here, however, is that the new pieces are crafted of 4026 stainless steel tubing with galvanized steel stamped heat boxes.

The price might seem a little outrageous at $2,995 for a pair, but not when you consider that ‘unobtanium’ originals and new old stock piece in like-new shape regularly trade hands for somewhere between $4 and $6 thousand dollars, it’s a pretty good deal. I’ve even seen rusty old useless junk originals with the flanges cut off on eBay for more than $700 dollars per side. Just for the fact that there is no longer any leg work to do in tracking down a good set, the price seems to me like it would pay for itself in time savings. Add in the fact that these won’t rot away any time soon, and it seems like a no-brainer.

Dansk is currently in production of their first run of these heat exchangers, and Stoddard NLA is the only source for them here in North America. To get your name on the list to receive a set, give Stoddard a call at 800-438-8119, or online at Stoddard.com. Dansk is running a limited number of sets based on the initial pre-order, so get your order in now to be sure you are on the list to get yours if you need them.
