Video Review: Wringing The 918 Spyder’s Neck

The 918 Spyder is entirely crafted of superlatives. It does things that other cars can only dream about when tucked safely in their garages at night. It is a tech machine on wheels. It is, as Mike Spinelli puts it in the latest TEST/DRIVE video, “science fiction on four massive Michelins”. It’s a nerdy adrenaline-junkie’s dream, to say the least.

Spinelli has so many good things to say about the car, playing up its admittedly amazing capabilities. TEST/DRIVE’s scoring system doesn’t really play to the 918’s strengths, unfortunately, as it lost a lot of marks on trunk capacity, vehicle versatility, practicality, value, and cabin space. The car did, however, score perfect marks in tech, quality, agility, grip, engine, gearbox, speed, and noise. There were two little things that might be worth a quibble, brakes and steering were only scored a 4 out of 5. I can only imagine that this has to do with Porsche’s use of regenerative braking and electric assist steering.

Is the 918 Spyder the Porsche of the future? Is it the car that will stand as a testament to Porsche’s engineering ability? Will the 918 be a future classic? Do I really wish that I had one in my garage right now? Yes to all.
