Earlier today, Porsche introduced the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S Cabriolet. Like the coupe version, the new drop-top is lighter in weight, offers more power, lower fuel consumption and a standard 7-speed manual gearbox. Prices start at $97,300 for the 911 Carrera and $108,000 for the Carrera S Cabriolet. They should arrive in dealers sometime this coming spring.
Redesigned Porsche Cabriolet Top
Of note is the completely redesigned convertible top on the new 911. Porsche’s engineers completely recreated the top resulting in a flexible roof with a glass rear window and three individual, integrated convertible top elements (otherwise known as the “top bow”). Each element/panel is made of magnesium and covered with fabric reducing overall weight from previous models (no word yet on just how much, but we’ve asked and will update as soon as we get the answer).
The new top incorporates a water channel the ensures no moisture or rain finds its way into the Porsche when the doors are open. Porsche claims the fabric on the top is tighter than before adding more than just aesthetic value. However, the stated drag coefficient of .30 is actually higher than the .29 of last year’s model (not that I think anyone would ever be able to notice).
Porsche’s cabriolet roof open and closes in just 13 seconds and you can do so up to speeds of 31 mph. While we haven’t driven it yet, the roof is more heavily insulated making this cabriolet quieter and warmer than before. This lets you focus solely on the sound of the motor.
Lastly, the new 911 Cabriolet has an electric wind deflector as an option standard equipment. No more stopping to get it out of the luggage space, unpack, unfold, etc. etc. Now, with the touch of a button, at any speed, you can extend and retract the wind deflector in 2 seconds. Pretty cool!
