Older Boxsters are becoming more and more affordable from an acquisition standpoint. Good examples can easily be found in the $10 to $12k range. For those with patience, and a little luck, decent cars can still be had south of $10k. However, the question then becomes, just because you can afford to buy it, can you afford to maintain it? We’re going to answer that question with help from another Boxster owner.
In April of 2015 Neil purchased a 2001 Porsche Boxster S as an everyday car he could occasionally track. Since then, he’s documented his ownership experience, including routine maintenance and performance modifications, via his YouTube channel “Road and Race”. In fact, frequent readers of FLATSIXES.com will find Neil and his Boxster to be familiar as we’ve featured them before. Neil’s most recent video breaks down his total cost of ownership over a 20-month period.
All in, Neil spent just about $3700 in a little under two years. At first, that may seem like a lot, but when you break it out and get rid of the non-essential items (his performance modifications and items he replaced that he admits weren’t necessary) the number drops down by half to just under $1500. Then, of that $1500 a huge portion of it is on tires (which do count as maintenance so we can’t really discount those).
So, at least according to Neil’s experience, if you choose your used Porsche Boxster well (be sure to have a PPI done on your Porsche) and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, $750 a year for maintenance isn’t too bad at all.
