What to do When a Porsche Panamera Shows up in Your Driveway?

First, pick yourself up off the ground. Second, you drive it of course!!! Unfortunately, unless you’re one of the anointed few at the likes of Car and Driver then chances of driving one anytime soon are Slim to none (and Slim, as it’s been said, is in Texas drinking a beer). So, in the mean while, I’ll just have to settle for pictures courtesy of those that have had a Panamera show up in their driveway.

The picture above was sent to me today as a teaser for more to follow. The best parts about this picture, and the ones coming later in the week, are that:

1. They have never been published before.
2. They are the first I’ve seen that aren’t staged, Photo-Shopped or otherwise re-touched.

The fact is, the more I see the Panamera, the more I like. There, I said it again. I like the Panamera (but I still want to drive it). Let the flaming begin!!! 🙂

  • doe you want some pictures from the panamera allready, without teasing? I made some pictures last easter in Holland..

  • I must admit as well, the more I see it, the more I like it. For me, the straight on side view of must any recent Porsche car is not its' most flattering. From any other angle though, things look dramatically different to my eye.

  • One question, John...

"If properly equipped with a sport chrono, you can shave almost .2 seconds off these times"

How does a stop watch make the car go faster? Or is it implying there's some sport package goodies that come with the chrono that actually affect the performance?

  • @Andrew,

LAUNCH CONTROL!!! If it works anything like it did on the 997 Carrera S I drove .2 seconds may be conservative.

  • @Guyon, Glad to have you on board. It's good to know I'm not alone!!!

@Maarten, I"ll definitely take any pictures you have.

@Brett, Agreed. However, the car looks completely different in person (or so I'm told). The most noticeable characteristic is the size. Once past that, I believe the car is quite please to the eye. I'm hoping to find out real soon!!!

While the Sport Chrono package includes the timer, it’s really just an indication of what is underneath.

The ‘Sport’ button, and in the case of PDK, a Sport Plus button enhances engine response (throttle mapping) as well as modify shift points (up and down), adds a “hard” rev limiter in the higher gears, quickens shifts and most interestingly, PSM limits are relaxed.

As John mentioned, it also provides “launch control” for the PDK cars – shaving two tenths off of 0-60 times, and making PDK cars four tenths of second quicker than the six-speed manual cars. Road and Track recorded a 4.1 0-60 time for a PDK equipped Boxster S, and a 12.6 second quarter mile.

The Sports Chrono package has gotten a bad rap because of the lap timer function, but there has always been much more to it.

  • I suppose that justifies its price tag a little better, then! I always thought it was sort of ridiculous to pay 4 figures for a glorified -- and might I add -- inconvenient to access when you'd want it (on the track) most. I pictured people trying to time their laps and manipulate the selector arm as they cross the finish line and wreck from losing concentration when turn one met them...

Thanks for clearing that up, guys!

  • @Andrew, I was going to go all technical on you like Dave did, but I wasn't sure you could handle it. Besides, I figured "launch control" explains everything.. :-) The best part about Launch Control on a Porsche is that you can use it without voiding the warranty!!!!
