Porsche Panamera TV Commercial

By now, most of you have seen the videos of the making of the new Porsche Panamera commercial. Today, Porsche launched the finished product on you tube. While I enjoyed the video below, I do hope they release a much longer version for on-line consumers. It would be great to see more of those amazing cars they compiled to create the commercial.

  • I wonder who else will see how the silly Panamera stands out like a sore thumb amongst all those other cars. Similar to the Cayenne this car has *nothing* in common with all those other cars. It is not exclusive, it is not a sportscar, it is heavy, it is ugly, it is over-engineerd. Granted, it is probably fast, powerful and competent. (So what? --so is Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc).

    To even make such a commercial in the first place and to call it part of the "Porsche family tree" is such a laughingly obvious way that the Porsche marketing department is painfully aware that it is actually NOT.

    Also funny how they brought Dr. Ferry's name into this as if he would've endorsed this insanity.

    It will probably sell a lot of units to non-Porsche enthusiast and make Porsche / VW millions as they destroy the brand that took years to build.

    • I have had many Porsche automobiles. I currently have a GT3, Cayenne GTS and a Panamera GTS. The Panamera is one of the finest cars I have ever owned. The looks grow on you and if you see it in person, it looks better than in a pictur.

  • @Dave, Thanks for sharing. Any chance of getting the hi-res version uploaded to YouTube? Trying to watch it on the panamera site is painful. I have a very fast machine with an extremely hi-end graphics card and a full T1 for internet connection. Even still, the video is choppy!! :-)

  • That is a very nice website I must admit. They really push the "Family" idea even harder there.
    I suppose if it doesn't exist in reality, you can always cleverly create the perception.

    The 986 saved them from bankruptcy. I was seeing the Cayenne being finally released, but I kinda under$tood it, and in the end, managed to live with the idea.

    Being 993 / 996 owner, I can only be amused, at best, by that Panamera car. I recently decided to turn myself to older models, even exploring BMWs heritage, E28, E34 and such. I know my little individual protestation is silly and, indeed, they might sell a lot of that atrocious "thing" to non-Porsche enthusiasts, for a while. But on the long run those decisions can only dissolve the brand and kill the core.

    If I ever was in the market for a sedan, I would never go for the Porsche one.

  • The Panamera is not a beautiful car by any stretch of the imagination but if it drives like a Porsche I will consider it seriously when it comes time to replace my XJ8L. I like the idea of having the fun of driving a Porsche every day and being able to bring along my family.

    The Panamera business case was likely somewhat similar to the Cayenne's--many Porsche owners (myself included) also have a luxury sedan and a high end SUV. The hypothesis clearly was/is: why not have the ability to meet all of the customer's transportation needs as they are clearly interested in the Porsche "core brand values"? Thinking about it, I am not sure that it is a bad hypothesis.

    Regarding the linkage to the family tree of Porsche, the key question is: what defines a Porsche? Is it the engine configuration/location? Number of seats? Body type? Price? Number of wheels driven? Vehicle size? Farm implement? Where is the clear pattern on any of these dimensions for past offerings that were Porsches?

    I think it is less about any of those things and more about how the car feels and drives that makes it a Porsche but that is just me.

    I would be interested in hearing from detractors exactly why the Panamera is "not a Porsche" in a clear, somewhat objective manner.
