800 Horsepower in the Fog: Laguna Seca in a 935.

Sports car racing in the 1970s and 1980s was a very special time. The Porsche 911 was one of very few cars which participated in both Group 4 and Group 5 racing. While the largely production-based 934 tackled Group 4, the wild 935 silhouette cars played in Group 5. With as much as 800-horsepower on tap, these were mythic beasts in every sense of the term (making the “Moby Dick” moniker for the long-tail 935’s appropriate in more ways than one).

Very few of us will ever have the chance to sit in one of these monsters, let alone drive one. Thankfully driver Zak Brown donned a visor cam and allowed us along for the ride. For more on the 935 experience, Road & Track writer Sam Smith took a spin in one, noting that the car “doesn’t accelerate, it evaporates from one place and appears in the next.” Heady stuff indeed.
