Come for the gorgeous yellow widebody 911, and stick around for the interesting stories that its owner, Nick Cassidy, has to tell. We’re particularly taken in by the story of his mother chasing a group of bank robbers around London in an old 911. Because Nick’s parents had an affinity for Porsche when he was younger, he fell in love with them as well. Like many of us Porsche nerds, it’s a life-long affliction.
He’s nicknamed the car ‘Edith’ after Edie Sedgwick, an actress, model, and one of artist Andy Warhol’s “Superstars”. The car is called Edith because, as Nick claims, it’s a bit of a Femme Fatale that will kill you dead if you treat it wrong. “You’ve got to be awake to drive it“, as it doesn’t have modern traction control or anti-lock brakes. With big air-cooled power and a whole lot of tire, this car has a lot of potential for speed, but you really have to know how to treat it.
Nick equates his collection of old Porsches to searching through the stacks at record stores for a nice piece of old vinyl to add to his collection. In a way, we completely understand his meaning. Playing vinyl is a more intimate experience than queing something up on Spotify. It’s a search to find the right piece, and you have to interact with the music (flipping the record, adjusting the needle weight, etc.) in a similar way that interacting with an old Porsche is more difficult and rewarding than any modern automatic commuter car.
While Nick’s attitude may seem a bit pretentious in this video, we’re finding it difficult to completely disagree with the things he’s saying. In any case, Edith is a damn fine car, but we’d hate to get on her bad side.
