The natural path of car ownership for an avid VW geek begins with a Golf and ends with a 911. Brian Scotto is no different, and after saving, selling some stock, and reaping the benefits of the housing collapse, he made a white 965 Turbo his very own. Being a man of style and taste, he used his vast network and contacted a man who’s become something of a rock star icon in the world of Porsche tuning. Akira Nakai, better known as Nakai-San, is the man who took Scotto’s Porsche and molded it into a road-going racing car with more attitude and presence than a GT2 RS.
Though the wings, loud paint schemes, garish brand names, and impossible stances are what most think of when RWB, it’s all the little details and hints of character that make them such unique creations. In Scotto’s case, it’s the strip of amber rust on the hood, the mixture of Japanese and German tuning influences, and the choice of colors that make it special.
Big canards are almost ignored with all the other odd touches present.
More than just a fashion symbol, the 965 is appropriately fast for something with snorkels flanking the rear wing. With the help of BBi Autosport and an exhaust system of questionable legality, the 3.6-liter engine makes 400 horsepower in a progressive, manageable, un-widowmakerish fashion.
That shade of yellow, a little reminiscent of a school bus, seems out of place—and that’s part of the punk-rock charm of RWB cars.
It might not be everybody’s cup of tea. It might not have the congruence that the typical fan expects with a classy vehicle like the 965. Nevertheless, it’s a statement, a serious performer, and a inspiration for that penny-pinching high schooler desperately trying to graduate from his Golf GTi to a G-series 911.
