Was this Porsche 911 crash a result of street racing?

Listen, street racing is bad. It’s always a dumb idea and you should never do it. Especially in your Porsche. Just don’t, okay? Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way we can all gather around and have a hearty laugh about this dork smoking the heck out of his 911 while (allegedly) trying to race a Honda Civic. This seems like a case of someone who was out of their depth at the wheel of a rear-engined sports car, and didn’t fully grasp how weight transfer works. That’s one way to get a crash course in physics.

As you can see from the local news report below, this car’s demise was captured on video from the dash cam of an innocent passerby. The silver 911 [the video is a little blurry, but the car appears to be a late 996 Carrera 2] speeds into the frame from stage right and tries to change two lanes in front of the camera. It could be assumed that the driver lifted in the middle of the lane change, and the forward transfer of weight got the rear end light, sending the car into a spin. It looked like the car was almost recovered after an initial light brush with the center barrier, but then it took a sharp turn and bashed headlong into the wall.

According to the news report, the car was later found abandoned at a gas station, so presumably the driver just left the scene of this crash and kept going until the now smushed radiators gave out and cooked the motor. Nice work by everyone involved.

While we can’t know for sure that the Civic was involved in this incident, it certainly doesn’t act as though it was innocent. It doesn’t always take two to tango, when it comes to road incidents, but either way, if you can’t withstand the urge to street race against a Honda, do you even deserve a Porsche?
