Porsche Scion Opens World’s Largest Transportation Toyland

The new Hanz-Peter Porsche TraumWerk museum in the Berchtesgaden area of Bavaria truly is, as its name implies, a “dream” world for those who still see the world with a child’s eye. Stuffed full of Porsche’s personal collection of toys including cars, ships, planes and any other mode of transportation you can think of, the museum is a nod to Porsche’s own fascination with collecting that started as a child.

Asked by one interviewer about his newest creation, Porsche said, “I hope to make children happy with this.” In trying to imagine his own reaction if he were a child seeing his creation of for the first time, “I would just gawp in silence,” the German-born industrialist concludes.

The building covers nearly 275,000 square feet filled with model railways, tin toys, stuffed animals, cars, airplanes and model ships that highlight the versatility and the transformation of the toy through the decades.

The centerpiece of the museum is a model railway covering more than 4300 square feet and consisting of nearly 1.7 miles in track where up to 40, of 180 trains in total, will be in constant motion. Along with the many scenes and dioramas to be found along the tracks is a nod to Porsche’s family legacy. Visitors will see miniatures of the Stuttgart Porsche factory as well as the original design offices in Gmünd.
