When Porsche fist released the video in this post we got caught up in what appears to be a glimpse of the much anticipated Cayman GT4. So much so, that we never really shared the story behind the original intent of the video Let’s fix that for you now.
You would think if anyone is going to have at least one example of every production model Porsche made it would be the Porsche Museum. Surprisingly, that wasn’t the case until very recently. They were missing a 901, one of the very first 911s Porsche ever produced (Only 235 911s were produced in the first model year and of those only the first 82 had the model designation 901). The car they found, chassis number 57. Watch it being restored in this video.

Somehow, a German TV station got wind of an old Porsche sitting in a barn. The presenter, Otto Schulte, said “we’re always curious about old Porsches” so they set off to investigate. What they found was an enthusiast who purchased the Porsche from the original owner many years ago. At first, like most of us, this enthusiast enjoyed driving it as much as possible. Then, however, life started to get in the way. First he got married, then he started a family and soon he found himself without enough time to enjoy the Porsche. Additionally, as the 911 was too small to cart the family around in, it was slowly moved further and further toward the back of his garage. At some point, years later, the enthusiast though he would buy another 911 with the intention to restore it alongside his “original” 911. You know what they say about good intentions and I’m sure you an guess what happened to his restoration projects. He never finished.
Back to our TV presenter Otto Shculte who upon seeing the Porsche said, “Of course it wasn’t immediately obvious that this was such a rare model, but after brief research it was clear that the car was still very valuable, even in this condition.” A call was then made to the Porsche museum where they learned the true value of the 901. With the numbers showing that the car still contained its original engine, and the vehicle registration documents were intact, Porsche must have made an offer the owner couldn’t refuse as it was soon on its way back to Zuffenhausen where it is now undergoing the restoration you see above.
