It’s a very happy Christmas season for Ottocar J., an 80-year-old Porsche fanatic from Vienna who just picked up his 80th model from the company’s catalog. And honestly, I’m not sure he could have picked a better example to commemorate the joyous occasion, as he optioned a gorgeous Miami Blue four-liter-powered Boxster Spyder. He event went with the option to pick the thing up at the factory, which is just living the dream, right? According to the collector, he’s been coming to pick up his new Porsches in Stuttgart ever since 1977 when he purchased a Carrera 3.0. Now that’s dedication.
There is a saying around these parts, ‘you should always get it in the good color’ and Mr. Ottocar certainly did.
As is often the case, Ottocar’s obsession with Porsche began at the race track. Racing various machines in the early 1970s, he noticed he had a hard time keeping up with the flat-six-powered track machines, “The Porsche cars simply flew past me on all sides,” he recalls. He saved up his pennies and bought his first Porsche, a 1972 911E in Speed Yellow. So he has a habit of getting the good color. And once he climbed aboard that car, he knew he was home. It kicked off a lifetime of Porsche passion.
Today his collection comprises 38 cars, which is plenty for this gentleman driver, as it gives him a different car to drive every day of the month, plus an extra for the weekends. He’s still dedicated to on-track action with his Porsches, though the weaponry has been upgraded a bit. Ottocar now regularly vintage races his 917, but his stable also includes a 956, a 910, a 904 with the original Fuhrmann four-cam engine, and a shiny 964 Cup car.
On the road, Ottocar regularly chooses his 981 Boxster Spyder for daily driving duties. He won’t name a favorite Porsche, but it’s clear that this one is high up on the list, and for good reason! “The sound, how it drives, its suspension, everything that it does – it is the only one of my road-legal Porsche that reminds me of my 910,” says Ottocar. Well, he’s bound to enjoy his new improved four-liter Spyder even more.
