You’re So Vain

Should I? Shouldn’t I? For months now I’ve wondered if I should get a vanity/personalized plate for my Porsche. I’ve always associated vanity plates with a need for attention. They shout out, “Hey, look at me, I’m a phsrink (HEAD MD), or my car’s fast (FASTER).” You get the idea. Then, I started seeing lots of Porsches showing off their license plate flair. Some of them a little creative (others not so much). In fact, during a recent trip to watch the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona a good 15% to 20% of the Porsches in the PCA paddock had a vanity plate of some sort. Here are just a few of them.

Liked the plate and loved the car

Thought this was pretty creative

While pretty obvious, it still worked

I’m always interested in how creative people can get in such a limited space like a license plate. My Porsche is registered in Massachusetts which is limited to six characters (making it even more difficult) to choose. Can you help? I would love to hear some suggestions or creative ideas for a vanity plate.

Back when we originally ran this post it incorporated a poll on how many of our readers had vanity plates on their Porsche. The poll ran for a week and we published the results in a post entitled, “Is Driving a Porsche Reason to be Begrudged.

  • I think it can look quite good depending on what it says. Over here in the UK we have some different rules and regs about personalised registrations, but you do see some quite good ones.

Our plates are a different size and shape, with the current trend seemingly shortening the actualy plate.

I did see a boxster with the reg B0 XTR which looked good. A friend has simply 16v on his car. Must be worth a fortune in the UK reg scene. I think if it is something to do with the car it looks great. When you get some half hearted attempt at the drivers name it looks a bit tacky. D4 V3 or P4ul5 is not good!

  • In Ohio, for 10 dollars more than a standard plate you can customize yours slightly, so long as your submitted plate conforms to the following: 5 Numbers followed by 2 Letters.. So mine is 86944 AG, which is the year and model of my beloved beater, followed by my initials -- It's tidy and you don't look like a conceited ass like those folks with the plates like "NOS FTW" or "MYRYDE"

    Just my $0.02.

  • @PB, I agree about the half-hearted attempts. I've received a bunch of emails with different suggestions and pictures. I'll post some of them in the follow-up and when I do the poll results in a few weeks.

@ Andrew, I've always felt you opinion was worth at least a nickel!! :-)

  • Here are just a few of the plates I've had over the years. FLY-ME.....BOOOST....A928GTS....WRAPRND(NICKOLAS CAGE)....V-FAST....C2TURBO....WILS930

  • My previous license plate read: B4 KIDS (it was on my C5 Corvette). When I got the 911 Turbo, I decided it deserved the ultimate honor! So now it reads B4 I DIE..(.kids can wait....you're only young once! :)

  • Scariest license plate I've seen had to come from a divorce... woman driving a boxster with the plates reading "WAS HIS"

    ouch!

  • No kidding! That woman's never going to get another steady man with that plate --

"You have a Porsche?? Wow, that's pretty neat, can I see it?"
"Uh.. Okay. It's that black one there.."
    "What's the license plate mean?"
"Oh, I went through a divorce and robbed that man blind! It was pretty cool and -- hey! Where are you going?"
