900-Horsepower FrankenPorsche Blitzes up Pikes Peak

With the air quite thin at the top of Pikes Peak (14,114′ above sea level), forced induction is required to keep a competitive pace. Almost invariably, those at the sharp-end of the pack use turbos or superchargers, and this monster—titled “The Porsche 911 Turbo S GT3R America Cup”—uses a heavily-massaged turbo motor and a collection of racing bits to provide high-altitude propulsion.

Porsche of Colorado Springs started tweaking what was once a stock 2014 991.1 Turbo several years back with the intention of going hillclimbing. Gradually, they morphed this road going 911 into a genuine competition chimera with a selection of parts from Porsche’s racing lineup. The bumpers, fenders and deck lid are from a GT3 Cup, a monstrous rear wing comes from a GT3R, and a front splitter—fitted with custom endplates—from a GT America. All that racing bodywork helps bring the heft down to just 3,000 pounds.

The athletic stance comes thanks to DSC coilovers and 18″ Forgeline wheels shod in 330F/330R Avon tires. The near-square setup offers a Porsche that’s neutral with some assuring understeer in the slower corners, but lots of stability in the faster stuff. Since a little understeer is correlated with strong traction, it’s an appropriate setup considering the amount of grunt provided by the incredible motor.

ByDesign Automotive provided their Stage 4 engine kit to bump power to an astounding 900 horsepower, which is somehow applied to the pavement without the slightest hiccup. Sure—sticky tires, a good amount of suspension travel, and all that wing help, but you still can’t help but wonder how it looks so composed.
