During the last hour of the World Endurance Championship’s 6 Hours of São Paulo, Porsche’s Mark Webber suffered a massive crash on the last corner of Interlagos. It appears that Webber lost control entering the high-speed section of the track, collecting the No. 90 8Start Motorsports Ferrari F458 Iltalia along the way. Webber’s No. 20 Porsche 919 Hybrid impacted heavily with the wall, ricocheting off it and catching fire as it slid to a stop near pit lane.
Amazingly, Webber climbed from the LMP1 car under his own power. Under an abundance of caution the Porsche factory driver was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Webber can be seen giving a thumbs up to the crowd as he was placed on the stretcher in this tweet by Marshall Pruett. Cressoni, the driver of the Ferrari collected in the crash, walked away unharmed as well.
Long time fans of Webber were quick to point out this wasn’t his first crash in São Paulo. During the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix Mark lost control in the same corner as can be seen in the video below.
UPDATE December 1, 2014:Early today Porsche provided the following statement regarding Mark Webber’s condition following the crash.
Porsche works driver Mark Webber spent the night in a local hospital in São Paulo after his accident in the six-hour race on Sunday. He sustained bruising and concussion. Mark is still under observation at the hospital with his team mates and members visiting him. He is set to return to the UK later this week.
On Monday morning Brazilian time he said: “I’m quite sore this morning, am pretty bruised and have got a stinking headache. I’ve got no recollection of the accident or how it happened. The team is looking into the details to find out more. Thanks to the medical team at the track and here at the hospital, who did a great job and are looking after me very well.
“On a positive note, it’s great that the boys in the number 14 car managed to bring home the victory, which is a fantastic way to finish off the season. I’m already looking forward to getting out there again next year.”
