Earlier this week, TruSpeed Motorsports announced the successful expansion of its motorsports division with two full season entries, Tom Haacker and Sloan Urry, in the IMSA GT3 Challenge Series. Coming off a successful year in 2011 as the Pirelli World Challenge GT champions, Truspeed’s multi-year expansion plans are on track.
“We had an incredible year in 2011, taking the driver’s and team championship in the Pirelli World Challenge, winning in our debut in IMSA GT3 Challenge at Laguna Seca and taking 2nd at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.” said Team owner Rob Morgan. “I wouldn’t say that we surprised ourselves with our success, but it was a very satisfying year, and critically, one that sets us up well to expand our operation. Running two cars for Tom and Sloan and running a third part-time car in IMSA GT3 Challenge is a methodically planned step in a multi-year expansion for us, and after a long winter of work, we’re excited for the “easy part” to get underway when we start the motors on the Porsches for the first time this week!” Morgan will step out of the cockpit for the 2012 season and focus his efforts on growing the racing organization.
TruSpeed’s Two IMSA Drivers
For 20-year old Sloan Urry, stepping up to IMSA GT3 Challenge is a the next step in his progression toward a full-time career as a professional racing driver. Having only driven a car in anger on track for the first time four years ago, he has made steady progression in developing his driving skill and racecraft, finishing on the podium in every Pirelli Driver’s Cup race in his 2011 season. Additionally, he scored a meaningful 2nd place at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill in his first-ever endurance race late in 2011. As he eyes a long-term career racing sportscars as a profession, he will drive the #20 TruSpeed Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup this season.
Tom Haacker, driver of the #80 G22 Racing / TruSpeed Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, will seek to gain experience racing in his sophomore season behind the wheel after a successful rookie season in the Pirelli Driver’s Cup in 2011. Haacker is more experienced in the cockpit than he lets on, however, having driven Formula Fords extensively in the late 1970s before switching his focus to building a business. Haacker was part of the team that nearly claimed victory for TruSpeed at Thunderhill late in 2011 as well.
