In case you’ve been living under a rock lately, there’s a new Star Wars film coming out on December 20th, and the marketing ramp up has already begun. In the past the Star Wars marketing has paired with Nissan as the official automotive partner, but this time Porsche has jumped on board for the final of the 9 film series. There are a couple of television and online advertisements that have already run, which you can watch at the bottom of this post.
But perhaps one of the more fun tie-ins between the two mega brands is this co-design challenge. This will be Porsche’s first effort at designing a spacecraft, and maybe the first time German designers have ever given a single thought toward science fiction? While the result of this pairing between LucasFilm and Porsche won’t be unveiled until the film debuts next month, it’s fun to know that Porsche is able to expend some effort on something that exists purely for fun.
“Developing a spacecraft with clear Porsche design DNA is exiting and challenging,” says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche at Porsche AG. “Even though they do not seem to share many elements at first glance, both worlds have a similar design philosophy. The close collaboration with the Star Wars design team inspires and fascinates us – I’m sure that both sides can draw major benefits from this exchange.”
“The worldwide appeal of the Star Wars and Porsche brands is shaped decisively by their iconic designs,” says Doug Chiang, Vice President and Executive Creative Director of Lucasfilm and responsible for overseeing all designs for the Star Wars franchise. “We are bringing together two worlds with this project: the exotic film design of a galaxy far, far away and the precision work that goes into developing emotive Porsche sports cars. This collaboration promises to produce an innovative design that will blend the best of both brands to create an exciting new starship worthy of Porsche and Star Wars.”
Is it a Taycan that can drive in space? Is it an X-wing fighter that looks like a Porsche? We’ll see in December, I suppose.
