Porsche is planning a work of art as a new landmark for visitors, employees and fellow citizens at its headquarters in Stuttgart. Their intent is to erect he sculpture on the rotary/roundabout in the center of the intersection on Porscheplatz. Porsche says, that ultimately, their aim is “to achieve a visual link with the Porsche Museum by creating an interesting and living scenic impression”.
If the 24 meter (78 feet) high sculpture looks familiar, that’s because we saw something very similar in 2013 at The Goodwood Festival of Speed. While Porsche didn’t mention it in their press release, we can only assume the work is by the same designer, Gerry Judah.
This version is slightly smaller at 78 feet tall. However, like the Goodwood sculpture it will consist of three steles, each of which has a Porsche 911 perched on its top. No word yet on which 911s will be chosen. However, Porsche does say the car will stem from various model years to document the history of their flagship model. As part of the installation, the rotary/roundabout, previously covered with white gravel, will be grassed over and the sculpture will then appear to be striving upward from it.
At the moment, the project is still in the planning stages. Porsche must first present the plans to the Environment and Technology Committee of the Stuttgart City Council and then to the Zuffenhausen District Council. Once approved, the sculpture will be erected and then inaugurated in an official ceremony in autumn next year.
