Chinese telecommunications company Huawei is using a Porsche Panamera to showcase the artificial intelligence built standard into each of their phones. By using a camera system mounted on a rooftop, they’ve linked their newest Mate 10 Pro smartphone (and its UDP technology) and put it in control of a Porsche Panamera. It works by using the the artificial intelligence found standard in the phone. Capable of recognizing objects via its video stream, the phone captures the dog, ball, human, or any of the ~1,000 objects in its database, and reacts accordingly based on the pre established operation for that particular object.
With the touch of a button, the driver can decide to move left, right, or stop in the event of coming upon an obstacle.

Huawei didn’t integrated the Panamera’s systems with the phone exactly. Instead, the steering and the pedals are controlled by a hydraulic system mounted in the Panamera’s trunk. All the passenger needs to do is select the avoidance maneuver through the phone’s interface, put the Porsche in gear, and start the application. As you can see, the Panamera takes avoidance action up to speeds of thirty miles an hour.
It’s a demonstration of the phone’s capabilities, and an interesting publicity stunt which, based on the accompanying YouTube comment section, has provoked the ire of several PETA members. Nevertheless, it certainly makes you wonder what a smartphone is capable of, and where these plug-and-play operations will fit into the narrative of the driverless car.
