Normally, when Porsche unveils a new model, especially something like a 911 GT2, you think Geneva, New York, LA, maybe event Detroit. What you don’t think of, however, is the stage of the Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 for short. However, that’s exactly where Porsche just unveiled the 911 GT2 RS during the introduction of the newly-announced Forza Motorsport 7. If you’re not familiar with E3, don’t worry, that probably just means you’re not a gamer. If you are, however, you know that E3 is the world’s premier event for computer, video and mobile game products. Now it’s also a place to launch Porsche’s next supercar.

There were no details of substance given during the press conference. However, we do know the new GT2 RS should make at least 640 horsepower from a 3.8 liter flat-six similar to the one found in the 911 Turbo S. On a side note, I wonder what this will do to the demand of the just announced 911 Turbo S Exclusive? I guess we’ll have to wait and see what pricing looks like to see how much these two might compete against each other.

Over the last few months we’ve been chronicling the various ways in which Porsche is engaging with the gaming market. Everything from putting Esport drivers on the podium at Le Mans to having their own Factory drivers vet the realism of virtual Porsches depicted in video games. Today’s unveiling of a new 911 model during a video game conference underscores this push into a new market in a clear and bold move.

We’ll have more details as they become available. Special thanks to friend, reader and contributor Mike Juergens for the heads up.
