Porsche Sets A New Nurburgring Lap Record For Production EV Sedans

Okay, so we should clarify a few things here. First, as you all know, the outright Nurburgring lap record is owned by Porsche’s hybrid 919 Evo with a 5:19.55 lap. Volkswagen recently set the fastest electric lap of the track with a 6:05.33. The fastest electric “production” car is the NIO EP9 hypercar, which set a 6:45.90 lap. As we drill a bit further down, Porsche this week have unveiled a new lap record for production electric four-doors with the new Taycan. They shoved test driver Lars Kern into the driver’s seat and he produced a mighty impressive 7:42 time.

“The Taycan is also suitable for race tracks and it convincingly proved that here on the world’s most challenging circuit,” Kern explains. “Again and again, I am impressed at how stable the all-electric sports car handles in high-speed sections, such as Kesselchen, and how neutrally it accelerates from tight sections, such as Adenauer Forst.”

“The Taycan mastered its Triple Endurance Run superbly. First, our electric sports car demonstrated the reproducibility of its performance as part of a strenuous test involving 26 successive acceleration runs from zero to 200 km/h. Then it completed 3,425 kilometres within 24 hours in Nardò without any issues and now the record at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife,” remarks Stefan Weckbach, Vice President Product Line Taycan. “Numerous factors contribute to this performance and the efficiency of the powertrain, also at high speeds. These include the chassis systems that react within a fraction of a second as well as the outstanding aerodynamics.”

Considering that the Taycan has turned in a lap time quicker than a whole slew of 997-generation performance 911s, including the GT3 and Turbo, that’s pretty impressive. Are you ready for the electric Porsche revolution?

  • Yes i ready for the electric revolution, i would buy one for around town, reason still sporty and fast like a 911, "but quiet" and not as noticeable like a GT3 or GT4 and similar, but would have the GT3, GT4 for the drive down to the track for the performance and the NOISE

    • Just watched the clip so spooky quite but amazingly fast and composed, true Porsche except no noise
