Video: Comparing the Porsche 993 GT2 Production Version to the Race Version

UPDATE: Seems like Porsche heard our complaints about not being able to hear the exhaust note. The new video below let’s you hear the Porsche 993 GT2 in all its glory.

Long time readers may remember the day we switched the name of the site from 993C4S.com to FlatSixes.com. Regardless of our logo, we haven’t forgotten our root. That’s why, when Porsche released the video below we were extremely excited. The Porsche 933 GT2 is perhaps our all time, must have, dream car. The video below gives a great, high-level overview of the difference between these two cars and why the Porsche 993 GT2 is still considered one of the best road going Porsches of all time. The only thing we would have done differently with this video to have turned down the background music a bit so we could more easily enjoy the exhaust note. Have fun!   • Having owned and raced a 911 GT2 Race car since new in 1995 through 2005 in PCA (in GT-1) and SCCA (in SP and SUPR) it was a marvelous race car with docile, precise and predictable handling capable of winning most of its races.

    Belying the factory Spec of 450 HP, the Dyno told us the power output was closer to 550 HP using the most aggressive of the 4 race programs available. Weighing 2,750 Lbs, it was a heavy car by race car standards and required super-stiff springs. Substituting carbon fire front fenders for the original metal fenders, and stripping one of the 2 fire bottles, and the windshield wiper mechanism and the large Driver cooling fan motor I was able to reduce the weight by 200 Lbs down to 2,550 Lbs.

    The rear wing and front splitter were very inefficient with huge understeer at the limit upon turn-in and oversteer at exit - which was fixed with the addition of a 3 inch metal splitter in front and a high-mounted Crawford-designed Wing in the rear. The car remained competitive winning its last PCA race at Sebring in 2005 before
    yielding to the superior power and improved handling of the water-cooled 996-based Race cars.
