This Is How The Top Of The 2015 Porsche Boxster Spyder Operates

Ever since the introduction of the 2015 Porsche Boxster Spyder we’ve been inundated with questions about how the top functions. Most of you know that its operation is much easier than the previous generation, but weren’t quite sure just how much easier. Fortunately, the video below will show you exactly what’s involved.

As you can see, while it’s still a manual process, it is much, much less complex than the 987 series; where the previous Boxster Spyder had a two-piece top that required complete manual removal, the new 981 Boxster Spyder’s top can simply be folded rearward into the trunk area. In fact, the entire operation, from start to finish, takes about 15 seconds once you’ve done it a few times (yeah, I know. It takes the guy in the video forever, but that’s because it’s for demonstration purposes. It doesn’t help that the editing makes it take even longer).

About The 2015 Boxster Spyder Top

The top itself is 22lbs lighter than that of a regular Boxster. The weight savings comes from reduced sound deadening material in the roofline, a flexible plastic rear window vs. a glass one and the lack of motors and gearing required for a fully electrical operating top. The only electric part of the roof is the front latch windshield at the windshield frame which secures the top in place when closed. This latch itself is operated via two buttons in the center console (secure and release) or via the Boxster’s key. The top is car-wash capable (not possible in the last version) and can be left up at any speed all the way to Spyder’s top track speed of 180 mph.
