Freedom behind the wheel, that’s what Porsche’s new Boxster GTS promises. The GTS is an all new experience, and yet a familiar one at the same time. It takes the already fanatically fun-to-drive 981 Boxster platform and kicks it up a couple notches. Falling only a few feet short of taking down the almighty 991 Carrera, the new GTS promises excellent driving dynamics at an excellent dollar to smile ratio.
In the face of the GTS launch, the Boxster has been somewhat overshadowed by its Cayman stablemate, but it wouldn’t be wise to underestimate this one. Unless you’re out to capture every last tenth of a second on track, the open-topped version of this sporting machine can provide an utterly impressive full-immersion experience. There isn’t much like the experience of bombing through the back country with the top dropped back; the sights, the smells, and the sounds are truly second to none.
I will admit to a little bias in this regard, but as beautiful as the new Boxster GTS looks, it would certainly be hard for me to choose a BMW Z4, Mercedes SLK, or Audi TT instead. The competition just doesn’t come close on this one. In fact, I’d be hard pressed to choose the only-slightly-faster Carrera Cabriolet over this top-of-the-line mid-engine roadster, especially as the Carrera Cab comes replete with a window sticker premium of $23,000. More and more, the Boxster GTS seems like the performance bargain of the Porsche lineup.

One day Porsche will get over the rear engine concept and commit to the mid engine design as a better driving car. They are quietly moving the motor on the 911 forward and now have produced a Boxster/Cayman with similar hp, and the 918 so I think the writing is on the wall for mid engine Porsches as the eventual dominant design.
