Here’s what the new Porsche GT4 RS sounds like

It’ll be a while before the verdicts are in on Porsche’s new Cayman GT4 RS. Some people have driven it, unfortunately none of the FlatSixes staff, but all of them have sworn to secrecy as to what the car is like to drive until the embargo has lifted. The way a car sounds as it navigates around a race track, however, are not covered by the embargo. That is, it doesn’t give an impression of what it’s like to drive.

Except for the fact that many of us are motivated by the raucous sounds of a sports car as it revs through the range and changes through the gears with a glorious quick-shifting PDK transmission. Honestly, what more could you possibly need to know about a car to determine its driving experience? The Cayman GT4 RS probably drives a lot like a Cayman GT4 with an extra 79 horsepower and a bunch more aerodynamic downforce. It’s pretty easy to guess what that drives like, right? Good. The answer is good.

So what does the thing sound like? Again the answer is good. With a proper 4-liter flat six that revs to 9,000 rpm, it was always going to sound pretty great. With six individual throttle bodies, massive long-track intakes that scoop air from right behind the driver’s head from the rear quarter window, and direct fuel injection, it’s one of Porsche’s most advanced engines ever, in one of Porsche’s best chassis ever. I’m not sure there is a better modern Porsche out there.

So, until we can get an honest account of what the car is like to drive, hopefully in the near future from a FlatSixes reviewer, we can all sit back, turn up the volume, and hit the play button on The Smoking Tire’s “Just The Noise” video, which we conveniently linked below. I promise, watching it will be worth your time.

  • Sounds absolutely fantastic. Wunderbar! Finally the 992 GT3 engine show-horned into the Cayman. Ive got the 1st one at my dealer coming too. KUDOS to Porsche Motorsport and Andreas and his team for "FINALLY DOING IT"
The Cayman needed that bad-ass engine with pankl titanium rods mahle pistons and GT3 throttle bodies. Keep building ICE engines as long as you can the faithful will buy them!
