Porsche Panamera is Ugly and Expensive

At all times I try to remain objective when it comes to Porsche. After all, this is the same organization that designed all the different variations of my beloved Porsche 911 along with the incredible Carrera GT. However, the Porsche Panamera seems to get uglier and uglier every time a new “spy” shot makes the rounds on the internet. Couple this with the extraordinarily high prices being reported and we have an epic failure in the making. Take a look at below and you be the judge.

Porsche Panamera Pictures

Most cars not yet officially released are usually seen with significant amounts of camouflage. These body covering panels alter the lines enough to keep the new style safe from prying eyes. In the pictures above, there are no tell tale signs of the usual body masking attempts that have been made in the past. In fact these pictures appear to be the car as it will be produced and released in the very near future.

I’m not a big fan of the “on-line rumor mill,” so there is always hope that this is just a huge joke being played on the press and Porsche enthusiast. But, if this is the real thing, I can’t help but think how disappointed Porsche is going to be with their sales numbers.

Am I the only one that thinks this car is an abomination? I can’t be alone in my thinking. Lastly, don’t forget my current poll. I’ve moved it to the side or you can tell me what model Porsche your own on the original post.

  • I would disagree a bit. I do not think it a pretty car, but it does look like a part of the Porsche family and it seems to have a bit of presence. I think seeing one of these either on the autobahn or outside a restaurant at night would make an impression of wealth and luxury. Not sportiness for sure. But the driving dynamics are what it is all about and we must wait a while for those reports to come in.

It is a bit taller and longer than I thought it would be, it looks to be a big car. I would love to see one next to a Quattroporte for scale.

The pricing though I think will cause some hiccups. They are nuts for something that is not as rare or handbuilt as a Bentley. Was thinking parity pricing with the 997 would be appropriate. Starting at $70K for the V6, up to $120K or so for the big turbo version. At those prices I think they would sell enough to be happy.

  • @Kevin,

As I said in one of my earlier posts, "To me, the Panamera took the worst parts of a 996, mated it with a badly copied 928 rear-end and threw four doors from a Pontiac Grand-Am in the middle for spite."

With that said, I didn't like the Cayenne when it was first introduced and it has since grown on me.

FYI, almost done with the first read of the book!! So far it is very enjoyable. I'll give it a second read and then post my review.

  • Hmmm...not too crazy about it but I have to agree with Kevin. When the Cayenne came out I was one of the first to go "BLECH!" However, I am now one of its supporters...as long as they make the cars I love, they can make other cars that support the development of the cars I love. :)

Speaking of spy video, have you guys seen the spy shots of the "baby Cayenne"?

  • @Porsche Girl,

That's a great way of looking at and one I've supported in the past. Use the commercial/mass produced/uglier cars to support the development of our 911s and "Fritz." :-)

I've seen most of the pictures that have made their way around the net on the baby Cayenne." I'm still waiting to see something a little more defined.

  • I have to admit, I have not been very impressed by the pictures that I have seen so far. But, and this is a big "but", I also have to admit that Porsche has a tendancy to make me eat my words every time I doubt them. I doubted the Boxster, I was wrong, it is phenomenal car. I doubted the Cayenne, I even thought it would be the end of the brand, we all know what the Cayenne has done for Porsche. I thought the Cayman was ugly when I first saw it in pictures, when I was at the training event and it was unveiled, I realized that I was very mistaken, the car was beautiful. I have learned my lesson at this point. No matter what my first instinct may be, when it comes to Porsche, they do nothing without overcalculation and precise planning. I admit, I am not overly impressed by the pictures, but I will not make the mistake of throwing the greatest car brand in history under the bus again. Until I see the finished product and spend time behind the wheel, I will not make my decision. Driving the Cayenne is what made me love it, not how it looked. It's like having a so so looking girlfriend that rocks your socks off behind closed doors and loves you to bits. I'd rather have her than a bombshell that is an airhead and wants to suck my bank account dry.

Now that I have stuck up for Porsche, perhaps they wil grow a pair and stick up for us Canadians by stopping the importation of all of the US cars into our country or at least do something about the rediculous pricing disparity so that our economy will stop getting flushed down the toilet?

  • @Christian,

someone recently emailed me pointing out the fact that they saw camo on the front spoiler, rear lights and rear fender bulges. After taking a longer look at the pictures I completely agree with their assessment.

My sincerest hope is that Porsche has the last laugh and produces a car that we all would kill to own!!!

  • Although I am not a fan of the Panamera there seems to be significant "body masking" going on in the images shown. It seems as if the entire rear quarters and lights are surrounded by a material that gives the car a much more bulky look which is clearly unattractive.
