One of the greatest things about winning at Pikes Peak is usually the ability to finish your race and get out at the summit to celebrate with the fans, the other cars that finished ahead of you, and the wonderful donut makers located inside the summit gift shop. Because the Pikes Peak donut is fried at perhaps the highest donut shop in the world, the dough is delightfully fluffy and sweet. That recipe doesn’t really seem to work at any other place in the world, and it’s a special treat for everyone who makes it to the top. This year, however, the race was cut short due to weather, and the racers didn’t go all the way to the summit, stopping instead at three-quarters of the way up the mountain.
So instead of getting a nice donut pastry at the summit of the mountain, BBi Autosport had to wait until they got the car back to Los Angeles before they could celebrate their Pikes Peak Open class victory with donuts of a different kind.
While class winner Raphael Astier was already on a plane heading back to France, team boss Betim Berisha took the keys to the bright red monster and headed over to the Hoonigan compound in Compton to shred some real race rubber. This machine somehow manages to make around 1100 horsepower at the 9,000 feet above sea level where Pikes Peak actually has its start line. That’s a ton of horsepower for any machine, but when you consider that the Hoonigan shop is significantly closer to sea level, I can only imagine how much power this big Mezger-based flat-six was pumping out.
When you win at Pikes Peak, you get a donut. It might take a few weeks, and be a completely different donut from what you expected, but the donuts do come. Now crank it up and watch this monster eat its celebratory donut.
