Delta has a new marketing campaign featuring the #DeltaTake0ff hashtag. As part of the campaign, they recently filmed one of their massive Airbus A330’s during a takeoff sequence from varying perspectives. One of those perspectives was at ground level, in front of the plane, as it raced down the runway during takeoff. The challenge was finding a camera car that could basically outrun the A330 while it sped down the runway to a takeoff speed of nearly 180 mph. That’s where this 911 Turbo S Cabriolet came into play.
As one of four camera platforms the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet shared filming duties with a Cayenne Turbo, a helicopter and a small agile private jet.
Imagine this 250 ton airliner bearing down on you while you’re trying to film it. Fortunately, the camera on the 911 (the F1 from SHOTOVER) is controlled remotely by someone in a chase car or aircraft. This way the driver can focus solely on what they need to do.
While I’m not quite sure of the point of this video (maybe Delta wants it to go viral and sites like ours posting about it sure helps them) the resulting perspective from using the camera system on the 911 Turbo S, the Cayenne and the aircraft sure does make for some spectacular perspective and cinematography.
We don’t know much else about the 911, or the Cayenne, used in the shoot, but we’ve put inquiries out to a few people to see if we can get more information. If we do we’ll let you know.
UPDATE: November 16, 2015 Earlier today we heard from one David Nowell. According to David’s bio on IMDB he is a Cinematograhper who is normally credited as the “aerial director of photography”. His “Filmography” is a list of hits including everything from Lord of the Ring to The Avengers to Bad Boys. Think of almost any hit movie over the last 20 years and it looks like David was in charge of the aerial photography in them. Anyway, acording to David, the Delta spot you see above way produced by Pouya Creative.
As for the Porsches used in the shoot, David had this to say in response to our questions,
“[The] Cayenne Turbo is a special camera car owned by Filmotechnica. I was in that filming wireless to the Shotover F1 stabilized system on the 911 [that’s the camera rig]. [The] 911 was rented and I don’t know who from. Assume it is a 2015 as it had no plates. 911 was not modified. I believe the driver was Roger Richman. The 911 hit 150 mph to stay in front of the Airbus, but was maxed out due to aerodynamic drag.”
