Over the last several years, Ferrari has had a near stranglehold on the LEGO market in terms of automotive merchandising. Several Ferrari road cars and race cars have been transformed into LEGO minifig sets, but now it seems that LEGO has moved to start producing further models from McLaren, and more importantly Porsche, in their recently leaked Speed Champions line of building block sets.
As a long time LEGO fanatic, I’m excited to see these two Porsche sets for a could of reasons. First, I appreciate the work that had to be done to recreate a smooth and swoopy Porsche out of blocky and hard-edged materials. They seem to have done a decent enough job with all of the LEGO Porsches depicted here, and I hope this means that more will eventually come down the pike. Secondly, I really appreciate that these kits appear to have been created with no specialty bits. These cars all look like they were assembled out of existing block shapes, with the only exception seeming to be the 918’s bespoke design wheels (which look pretty realistic, by the way).
The 918 Spyder kit should be relatively inexpensive, probably priced somewhere under twenty bucks. It includes the car, a LEGO minifig wearing authentic Porsche Motorsport attire, plus a small start-finish flag stand, and a wrench. The little guy, appropriately decked out in Porsche e-Hybrid Acid Green, wears an equally appropriate sly smile, and a helmet for responsible on-track safety.
In the second Porsche themed kit, you get a few more goodies. Included in the kit is one 991-generation Factory-backed RSR (which appears to be a replica of the Sebring-winning #912 driven by Patrick Long, Michael Christiansen, and Jorg Bergmeister) in 2014 Porsche Intelligent Design livery, and one 997-generation 911 GT3 R-Hybrid which kicked all kinds of butt back in 2011. You also get a pair of Porsche Motorsport racers, a true start-finish gantry, an elevated podium, a pit-crew member, and all of the related tool. Of course no race would be complete without a motorsport photographer. This kit will likely be a bit more expensive than the 918 kit, but no worries, I’ll still be picking one up without question. When LEGO adds Porsche to their repertoire, it looks like they do it right!
