Last week, during the Tour of Utah, MTN-Qhubeka cyclist Matt Brammeier suffered a massive high-speed crash. The 30-year old cyclist was working hard to catch the leaders as he came down the hill on Guardsman Pass during Stage 6 of the race. It’s unclear if Brammeier lost control of his bike or if his brakes failed. Either way, he came into the turn way too hot and hit a Porsche Panamara (one of the support cars on Tour) pretty damn hard. So hard, I would say you should only watch the following video if you don’t have a squeamish stomach.
Fortunately, for Matt, it appears as if hitting the Panamera could have possibly saved his life. While he was fairly seriously injured, things could have been much worse. According to the story we read, had Matt not hit the Panamera there is a fairly good chance he would have continued right off the road and down a near cliff-like embankment littered with rocks and trees. If that had happened he would have been even more gravely injured or even dead. This is the first time I can think of that an accident involving a pedestrian and a Porsche was actually a good thing.
Matt, while a bit banged up, is on the road to recovery.
