JANUARY 15, 2018 UPDATE: Petersen released more information today, including additional details on some of the Porsches we can expect to see. They include the following:
- 1938 Berlin-Rome Type 64 race car
- 906 race car
- 919 LMP1 Hybrid
- The Petersen Collection’s 901 and Continental
- A rare model “X83” Turbo S Flachbau 964
- A rally-spec Type 953 911
- A Gulf 917K
- The Jägermeister 962
- The legendary Porsche 935 K3 Le Mans winner
- The 928 H50 study, a rare four-door prototype of the 928
Details on The Petersen Museum’s upcoming Porsche Effect exhibit are a bit thin, but we’re excited all the same. Beginning with an opening reception on February 1st, the museum is kicking off what they’re calling “one of the largest public displays of Porsche in North America!” In partnership with Porsche Cars North America, the exhibit will surely show off some seriously significant cars, engine displays, advertising collateral, and other supporting exhibits from Porsche’s long and intriguing history.
What we know so far
Setting up in the museum’s Mullin Grand Salon (currently housing The Art Of Bugatti), the Porsche-centric exhibit will run from February 2018 through January 2019, so if you can’t make the opening reception night, you will have plenty of time to get down to Los Angeles to see this collection. So far, we know that the 356 Continental (below) will be shown alongside a very early production 901, a 1973 Carrera RS Lightweight, and the Marlboro-liveried 993 GT1 that has been hanging out at the Petersen for some time now.
The exhibit will encompass five separate themes, each containing a combination of automobiles, artifacts, archival materials, film footage, and visual reproductions. These five sections are denoted as Elements of Style, Zuffenhausen and Beyond, Extended Families, Innovation Through Competition, and Word / Image / Object.
The opening reception will include a panel discussion with Tommy Kendall, Hurley Haywood and Patrick Dempsey. Additionally, there will be live music, book signings, gourmet food, wine, and custom Porsche-themed tours of the Petersen’s famous ‘vault’. Fund raiser reception tickets are $356 per guest, and $911 per VIP guest. VIPs will receive a limited run poster, a copy of Porsche 70 Years, and a limited edition exhibit book.
