The Goodwood Festival of Speed is the largest motoring garden party in the world. Taking place over four days (July 11-14) the weekend brings together cars and stars of motorsport and pop culture. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the festival and like the 19 previous events, one marque is chosen to be featured and represented with the Central Feature sculpture. This year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the 911, Porsche gets the honor.
Over 100 feet tall and weighing more than 25 tons, the sculpture showcases an original 911 from 1965, a 1973 911 Carrera RS and a 991 Carrera 4 at the end of three steel arrow. Each 911 appears ready to launch, which apparently, is exactly the point.
“I had to create a sculpture which personifies the energy and dynamic excitement not just of the cars and Festival of Speed, but also reflected how something as beautiful and dynamic as the 911 can in turn celebrate the event.” “The 911 is a fantastic shape, so I had to think, ‘what can I do with it?’ You can’t deconstruct it, so in the context of the Festival, however beautiful the 911 is, you need to embody a sense of speed. So the sculpture has to give the car the energy it deserves.”, said the sculptor’s designer Gerry Judah.
