There is an old VW Beetle ad from the mid 1960s which shows a Beetle with multi-colored body panels. The text of the ad goes on to explain that one fender is from a ’58, an other from a ’64, and the hood and door are from ’59 and ’62 Beetle respectively. VW was very proud to be fashion-immune, and as such parts were easy to find. As the 911 stemmed from the same family tree, it was susceptible to the same immunity to fashion and fads. FLATSIXES.com reader Charles Stanley’s ’85 Porsche 911 may technically be a G-Series car, but thanks to an aggressive backdate it’d be hard to tell at first glance.
Though Charles’ modifications are much more than skin-deep, the skin of this car is a very good place to start. From the chrome window trim and rear pop-outs to the all-metal long-hood conversion, Charles’ car looks less child of the ’80s and much more like a product of the late 1960s or early 1970s. The hood and rear deck are painted Porsche 414 Olive Green, and the rest of the car is finished simply in white. A TRE Center Fill fuel tank protrudes from the hood, and the wide black Fuchs fill the wheelwells beautifully.
While many modified 911s lose some measure of usability, Charles tried to maintain as much streetability as possible in this aggressive looking 911. Though usually one of the first items to be ditched, Charles opted to keep the A/C, and tucked the controls away out of sight. The houndstooth seats are from GTS Classic, and a measure of extra protection is given by a vintage roll bar. A Ruf tach rounds out the major interior modifications.
The car is no trailer queen, and Charles completed a 1200 mile run up the East Coast this summer with other R Gruppe members.
