Boost Brothers Garage bought a 944 for use as a track car. It’s not pretty. It wasn’t pretty when they started, and it was possibly less pretty when they finished. In just ten minutes though, the pair went from a relatively-complete looking (but non-running) 944 track car to something rather more peculiar. The car they started with looked faster than it was, it appears to be a base 944 wearing a Turbo front clip (see the wee-little brakes in the preview image?), the final product seems rather more interesting. If you are the sort of person who loves the warble of an Audi rally car, this may be an ideal 944 for you.
The video documents the process of updating an old and well used track car for new owners, including fitment of critical things like new seats, safety gear, and more. Unfortunately the original 2.5-liter 8-valve four only survived one full track day with its new owners before popping a head gasket. While replacement 944 engines are not hard to find, the Boost Brothers opted to go a different route.
Their choice of engine actually maintained the same overall displacement as the original engine- the 07K inline-five was used in US-market Mk.V Golfs and Jettas, and is in some ways related to the Lamborghini-Audi V10. While owners are often proud to say it’s just a Gallardo engine chopped in half, in reality the little five is quite distinct from the larger engines and is a pretty special piece on its own.
It’s a rather unconventional choice for a 944, as in stock guise it really doesn’t make any more power than the original four. That said, it is shorter and lighter than Audi’s classic inline-five from the 80s and 90s, and it loves boost. 07K powered cars have proven capable of absolutely absurd power figures, and with a name like Boost Brothers Garage I’m keen to see where they take this five-cylinder powered 944.
