It’s hard to say whether the 914 or the 924 is the most maligned Porsche model. Both were burdened with underpowered engines, and both were jointly developed with the giant conglomerate that is VW-Audi. The 914 of course coming from the VW side, and the 924 from the Audi side. Magnus Walker’s 924 Carrera GT is a rather different animal. Developed from the rather swift 924 Turbo of 1978, the 924 Carrera GT turned the dial to eleven. With bulging overfenders, flared polyurethane front fenders and a large hood scoop replacing the Turbo’s NACA ducts, it certainly looked the business. Magnus’ two-tone scheme and Outlaw wheels only enhance the image.
In Magnus’ driveway the Carrera GT is flanked by two other 924s. To the right of frame in the video is a traditional US-market 924 Turbo. To the left is something altogether more unusual; a Holbert Superwide. Magnus reportedly bought that car from a Rennlist member, and from the old Rennlist ad for the car it appears to be a pretty serious piece of kit.
This video is not about the Holbert Superwide, however. Magnus seems rather enamored with the Carrera GT, and appreciates the differences between the 924 and his fleet of early 911s. The turbocharged Audi inline-four with its Porsche-designed cylinder head offers a lot of character in a decidedly non-traditional Porsche package. His particular car looks especially handsome with his two-tone paint and gold wheels, and is a nice break from the more common India Red 924 Carrera GTs.
Carrera GT prices are not a great barometer as to whether the Porsche loyal are finally coming around to the 924. As a rare competition-oriented car, the CGT has always been valuable, if not as visible on the market as 911s. If sites like Bring a Trailer are any indication, enthusiasts like Magnus are starting to push transaxle values higher and higher.
As modern Porsches become increasingly digital, it’s lovely to see elderly once unloved cars getting the attention they’ve always deserved.
