A Quick Glimpse at 5 of Porsche’s Rarest Factory Models

When Porsche introduced their new “Top 5 Series” on YouTube, I was cautiously optimistic. In their trailer, they promised to provide us with a “whole new level of sports car history”. That sounded great to me. Watch the first episode below, it features a 964 Turbo S, a 924 Carrera GTS, a 911 GT1, a 911 SC/RS and a 356 American Roadster. Once you’ve watched, read on.

Missed Opportunity?

You tell me, was that a “whole new level of sports car history“? It sure didn’t seem that way! Sure, maybe those of us on this site are so intimately familiar with the brand that it takes more to excite us, but the whole video just seemed like a missed opportunity. What about that narration? It sounded like a bad reality/game show.

Hopefully, as we go forward, Porsche will dive deeper into more detail and history of each car vs. the high level brush strokes we got in this episode. Next week’s episode promises to explore “The 5 Best Porsche Sounds”. I wonder if it will focus only on exhausts or if they’ll explore that unique sound made when closing the door of a long-hood Porsche?

What do you think? Am I being to harsh? Maybe my expectations were to high. What were your expectations or what do you hope to see from the remaining episodes?

  • I fully agree. I woke up this morning excited to watch this video, had thought about it last night even! I am disappointed that they didn't tell me anything I didn't know. I want some new level of insight, some camera work that is more intimate that you can get at a car show, and for more time to be spent with each model. I have to say that I agree with the car choices though! It's always nice to see a 356 get top honors! I'll look forward to next week.

  • That was really underwhelming... I expected more from Porsche.

Seeing the 356 America Roadster was awesome though. The cut down doors always reminded me of the XK120. Probably my favorite 356 variant. I've wondered why the replica industry never picked up on that one in addition to the Speedsters.

  • Being repetitive here sorry, the only let down for me was the short length of the bio of each car for a total of some 3 minutes !?, this coming from a company with a PR dept that produces pages upon pages of product spec reports each model year. At least it had a car with the ignition switch on the right side of the wheel - contrary to a now infamous tweet.

  • Oh MY GOD! Number 3 was the 911 GT1 with the watercooled heads and fried egg headlights!? What! And this from the factory. Wait, only 21 made for the Le Mans series? I don't know what to say. After all the criticism and disparaging jokes about the 996. Next thing you know someone will come up with a permanent fix to the intermediate shaft bearing and rear main seal! Wait, that's already happened? Waaaah

  • I agree with others about the video being too brief. I also agree about the unjustified remarks hurled at the 996. And to see the GT1 on the list tells you how much “caca” spews out of these so-called Porschephiles’ mouths. Those headlights look great!
I read somewhere that the 996 was a victim of the era it was made, meaning the era of the internet. I that that, along with the class-action lawsuit prevented the factory from really fixing the IMSB problem (if Porsche were to fix it then it would have been admitting that the IMSB design was defective, which Porsche never acknowledged). Now that the 911 is going to be sharing its chassis with an Audi it will be interesting to see if there’s a future of iconic Porsche.
