Porsches are meant to be driven, and that’s a well-known fact. How they are driven – well, that’s a whole ‘nuther thing! This video explores that notion.
Tom Roos is passionate about classic Porsches and driving them on two-lane country roads. Why drive the old ones? As Roos explains: “When you are out there in a forty or fifty year-old car, you feel so much more connected…you feel more of the road…you smell what’s outside…you’re not sealed up from the world.”
Roos builds his case for this passion in this video that was shot and produced by PCA member Todd Taylor: “When I drive new Porsches…they are wonderful machines, and you know they have so much power. (But) I like what I have.”
Filmmaker Taylor had this to say about Roos, “If Magnus Walker is the Urban Outlaw of Porsches, then Tom Roos is the Suburban In-law of the marque — less outrageous on the outside but every bit as passionate on the inside about his ever-rotating garage of vintage Porsches.”

Roos’ garage is stuffed with classics: a ‘69 912, a ’73 911T, and a ’97 993 4S. Recently he and his friend Steve Gaddy added a ’63 356B Cabriolet to the mix. He drives them all, and often.
Roos is a lover of Carolina two-lane blacktop, driving roads that unwind over miles with a promise of good barbecue at the end. Roos is a past president of the Hurricane Region PCA and created the club’s annual after-Thanksgiving trek, “Spot’s Memorial Barbecue Run,” a driving event that features a long dash down country roads ending at a small town eatery. Spot, one of Roos’ gone but not forgotten 356s, left its oil mark on many a parking lot at these occasions. Long live Spot!
And long live the joy of driving a classic Porsche on a winding country road!

It is fantastic that Tom and his buds round-tripped 6700 miles GA - WA - GA in their 356s instead of leaving them shrink wrapped in a warehouse. I still prefer working AC and gobs of power for my fun, but it is always exciting to see a 356 on the highway where they belong.
I believe I met these gentlemen as in Yellowstone. There was three cars. Two coupes and one cabriolet. One coupe had Tennessee plates the other two cars had Georgia plates. They mentioned they were from Atlanta. I couldn't figure out how to upload the pictures I took. Great cars and people!
This has to be the best Porsche related video I have seen. I really connect with what Tom says, and how he says it. I also think he is spot on with the remarks he makes about the Porsche Club, seems we might be twin sons from different mothers. Thanks for making the video, it really perked me up, on a day when I was quite down.
I'm with James. Wonderful, simply wonderful.
Agreed. My 986SE will be old someday. A prelude of things to come. Very cool.
Fantastic video and a great bit of story telling. I lived the in the Carolina's in my past and what a great place to own a Porsche.
The video really illustrates the essence of the love we have for the brand and the people who we meet along the way.
