Porsche’s 959 was the height of automotive technology in the late 1980s, and was the ultimate in excess. It was quick, it was fast, it was comfortable, it was expensive, it was gorgeous, and it was absolutely perfect. In its era, it was a part of a super-car renaissance. Much like we are experiencing today with Porsche’s 918 Spyder, McLaren’s P1, and Ferrari’s LaFerrari, the 959 took on the best the world had to offer in the form of Jag’s XJ220, and Ferrari’s F40, though it did so in a very different way. Rather than attack the problem of achieving 200 miles per hour with brute force and gobs of power, Porsche used technology and near-perfect aerodynamics to their advantage. As they always say, “Work smarter, not harder”.
In their latest video, XCAR delves into the history of the 959, and what made it so great. Not only that, but they also got the privilage of racking up a few kilometers on a low-use car straight from the Porsche Museum. Jealousy isn’t normally a color that suits us, but we’ll make an exception this time. The 959 was a product of the times, but yet it was also well ahead of them. The racing history wasn’t what made the 959 special, the 959 was special on its own merit. There’s a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ involved here, as the 959 just invokes that feeling of special. You can see one rumbling down the highway, and you know it. You can see one as a part of a collection, and you know it. You can sit in one, and you immediately know it. You can’t really say why, but the 959 just exudes ‘special’. If you didn’t have the poster on your garage wall in the 1980s, you certainly knew someone who did. It’s that special.
