Porsche Classic unveils Carplay-ready infotainment for vintage 987, 997, and 955 Cayenne owners

If you’re the owner of a Porsche that is rapidly approaching its 20th birthday, you’re in luck! Porsche has developed a new Porsche Classic Communication Management plug-and-play unit that not only includes modern amenities like a touch screen, Android Auto, and Apple Carplay, but it visually fits the aesthetic of your car. This is a killer upgrade for any car, and Porsche has been selling this upgraded style of stereo in a single-DIN design for a while, and recently introduced a setup like this for 996 and 986 owners that absolutely rules. Now this system is available for fitment into your 997-generation 911 built between 2005 and 2008, a Boxster or Cayman from the 987 generation built between 2005 and 2008, or a 955-generation Cayenne built between 2003 and 2008.

“There is huge demand for contemporary networking of our timeless classics. And soon after the successful launch of the infotainment systems for retrofitting, we received corresponding queries from owners of early 911 generation 997,” says Ulrike Lutz, Director of Porsche Classic. “This is why we’re now significantly extending our range of Porsche Classic Communication Management Plus devices for retrofitting.”

It’s so hard to get by in the modern world without a good navigation system with a big clear display. This is something we’ve had to deal with for years while driving vintage cars. It’s not impossible, obviously, but it’s an extra level of inconvenient. It’s pretty cool that Porsche is still offering support for models that have been out of production since 2008, and for those of us who drive these cars every day, upgrading this PCCM unit will make our daily commutes and long road trips so much more relaxing and interesting.

So what all can this thing do? According to Porsche, it slices, it dices, it even folds your laundry!

“The PCCM Plus equipment includes a 7-inch touchscreen with a state-of-the-art graphical display. The version for the USA and Canada is ready for SiriusXM® satellite radio when purchased separately. The driver is provided with the latest on-board navigation with Points of Interest (POI) specific to Porsche displayed in 2D or 3D. Map updates will be offered for this at regular intervals in the future. Media playback is possible via USB stick, Bluetooth®, Apple CarPlay (from iPhone 5) and Android Auto™ (PCCM Plus only). Another function is the trip computer which provides lots of useful driving data. In the 911, the Boxster and the Cayman, personal settings for the car can also be stored. Depending on the vehicle equipment, this memory function can be used for the lights, the windscreen wipers, the climate control and the locking.”

That’s pretty awesome. This little unit isn’t cheap, but it’s also a lot less than you might imagine. You can get PCCM Plus for your old Porsche for just $1,475.99 plus the labor to install it. Now if only Porsche could figure out how to add ventilated seats and radar cruise to our old cars, everything would be perfect!
