Porsche-Based Interactive Art Exhibit To Be Unveiled Next Week In San Francisco

Beginning next Thursday, a unique Porsche will be on display as part of the first ‘If So, What?’ art fair, said to meld technology with art, at the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts. The fair/exhibition brings together music, design, artistic talent, and technology for a huge display of wild new-age art. This particular project melds the gorgeous design of a Porsche with colorful artistic design, and proximity sensing technology to craft an interactive display. The color of the Porsche changes based on how close the viewer is standing to the car, effectively making the skin of the Porsche a heat map of proximity.

Based on the rendering featured above, the project appears to use a 987 Cayman as the baseline. Crafted by recent California Institute of the Arts graduates, and done in conjunction with the German sports car manufacturer, this project is allegedly the first of many, dubbed an official “Porsche Art Media Installation”. I can’t personally think of any use for this color projection technology, but all-around proximity sensing could definitely find space as a future piece of Porsche road car technology.

While I don’t generally find myself a patron of art exhibits, I can definitely appreciate the form of Porsche’s Cayman. The 987 Cayman may, in fact, be Porsche’s most beautiful design, and I could stare at one all day. Using the Porsche as a canvas for a piece of art will only help to enhance the art’s appeal to automotive fanatics like us.

The Porsche Art Media Installation will be unveiled at If So, What? from April 26–29 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.

  • Where is the information for time, location, cost or other useful information for those wishing to visit the art installation? A nice general article, but useless for those wishing to attend.

Also, usjng words like “blockchain” apps, without explaining its utility, is a hollow throwaway phrase.

    • Hi, Stephen,

When I read the story I find that the location and time are clearly stated at the end of the article. "The Porsche Art Media Installation will be unveiled at If So, What? from April 26–29 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco." Where are you reading anything about "blockchain" apps in this story?

  • Great stuff!
Closing the gap on what I have been repeating for years, Porsche is a fusion of art and tech with two groups of fans clearly split down the middle.

    I like it.
