The folks at e-garage always seems to be able to produce some excellent video, and this one, shot earlier this year in Monterey, California with Pat Long and Magnus Walker, is no exception. The Ingram collection brought out some of their most famous 911s, including a 911R, and Magnus’ ST/R that they bought at Monterey in 2013. The video, however, focuses on just a handful of those that can be found in the book, Porsche Unexpected: Discoveries in Collecting.
My personal favorite is the 1974 Carrera 3.0 RS that both Magnus and Patrick had the opportunity to drive. The 3.0 liter is a very rare car, and cuts a dashing figure. It features a good down-low power, but according to Patrick will pull all the way up through 8,000 RPM. Like the year-earlier 2.7 RS, the 3 liter was and is a true race car for the street, and at those high engine revs, it just sounds so sweet.
Patrick is also shown driving a 1968 911L that was originally built for racing. The strange thing about Porsche in the 1960s was that they didn’t really believe the 911 would be good for road-racing, preferring to have them built for rally sport instead. It wasn’t until 1968 that the 911 really started to prove itself as a road-course racer on prepared circuits, and cars like this one are what made that possible.
Magnus had the opportunity to be reunited with his old STR build, which is one of the most gorgeous custom Porsches ever made.
Turn up the sound on the video and listen to them tearing it up in a handful of old long-hood Porsches. For more information on these cars, and others in the Ingram collection, Porsche Unexpected, it’s a fantastic book.
