Porsche’s Newest Electric Concept is a Cayman. Capable of 62 MPH in 3.3 Seconds.

Though Tesla’s popularized the high-end electric vehicle and confirmed its performance potential, some still worry for the sports car’s future when the combustion engine becomes a relic of the past. Frankly, I shudder at the thought.

Fortunately, there are a few reasons to look to the horizon with a smile. One of which is the Cayman e-volution: a machine designed for promotion and not production, but shows the worried enthusiast that there’s an exciting future for the silent, battery-powered sports car. Utilizing some of the technology expected to be found in the Mission E, this electric Cayman can sprint to sixty two MPH in a stunning 3.3 seconds, with a range of 200 kilometers and a charging voltage of 800 volts.

With the speedy charge offered by stations using Porsche’s Turbo Charging systems, the heftier Mission E will be able to charge its batteries to 80% of their capacity in just fifteen minutes; so the Cayman’s time spent at the plug will be very short indeed. This is fortunate, since the range of the electric Cayman is limited—just 124 miles per charge. Yet, this restricted range might be improved upon if the e-volution becomes a production car, since the Mission E promises nearly three times the range.

Because Porsche intends to dot major European highways with their rapid-charge systems by 2020 in a group effort led with Ford, Audi, BMW, and Daimler, the prospect of a practical and athletic electric sports car is all the more likely. Hopefully, these things will quell the concerned minds which cannot imagine a future where thrills and environmentally-conscious cars aren’t mutually exclusive.
