I understand that this site was once called Porsche Purist. I am not from that crowd. My affection for the transaxle cars is well documented, and I’ve always preferred the 356 to the 911. When I heard that the Boxster and Cayman were going to flat-four power, I was bothered less than most. When I ultimately heard the cars, however, I found them a little subdued. The performance never seemed to be a let-down, but it seemed that Porsche held the exhaust back a bit compared to their howling predecessors. The newly launched 718 Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS seem to change that. In addition to 15 more horsepower and dialed up aggression everywhere from the bodywork to the suspension, the new Porsches feature a rowdier exhaust note. If this new video from Porsche is any indication, the new 718 Boxster and Cayman GTS sound nothing like an overwrought Impreza. They sound delightful.
Porsches return to the Targa Florio in this video, and it’s glorious. The 718 RSK won some of Porsche’s first major motorsport victories in the late 1950s in the Targa Florio, and bringing its namesake there is all too appropriate. In the capable hands of Dario Franchitti and CJ Wilson, no small talent behind the wheel himself, the Boxster and Cayman look magnificent on the winding roads of Italy. With the addition of the 718 GTS models, Porsche now has GTS variants of most of their production models, including the 911, Macan, and Cayenne. Will the Panamera be next?
