This 4-mniute video clip features a 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster S being put through its paces on a series of mountain roads and switch backs. No voice overs, no commentary, just the sounds of Porsche's new turbo charged flat four engine.
We're going to hold off making a final judgement call until we're able to hear one in person as we were pleasantly surprised by the new turbo engine exhaust not in the 911. Based on what you heard in the video above would you give the exhaust note a thumbs up or a thumbs down?
Not a fan of all the popping, which makes it sound like it’s missing, but the under tones are quite nice and at least it doesn’t sound like a Suburu. I give it a thumbs up overall.
I don’t like the popping either. Too boy racer. Looks like a great car, but I’ll stick to my 911.
Ten Thumbs Up !!! Love the sound, and the back-exhaust rumble ( not “popping”) which is a type of back-firing that you only see in high performance engines; totally normal.
I’m a little disappointed as far as sound goes . The car probably runs great. As far as sound, I’ll take my NA 2.4 liter 2cam4 POLO in my 912.
It sounds awful!. Like someone coughing
Not bad but I prefer the exhaust note of my 4-cyl turbo Porsche, a 1988 951S with an aftermarket Fabspeed exhaust and a few minor engine tweaks.
???????? nothing quite like the sound of the aircooled engines even in Turbo guise!
Give me my 993 with the Fabspeed any day……even if it does wake the neighbours.
Not quite the Jag F-type but at least some pops and crackles. Quite nice to hear that engine talking back a bit. Wondering if that was PORSCHE Sport Exhaust?
Thumbs down. My 1966 MGB sounded better, especially in race mode, i.e. open exhaust for the track.
Good point Alex. I suspect you were listening to the sport exhaust. Can’t imagine the non-sport exhaust sounds close to this one.
This exhaust is awesome! I usually don’t like really loud ones, but this one hits the spot. Thumbs up!
No thanks! It sounds gutless compared to the throaty 981. I know on paper it’s not but I’ll keep my 981 S and enjoy the full package. (power, sound, handling) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZEx1eN2G58
Who said Gutless? );-)) No offense, but until you have logged a few hundred miles of neck snapping acceleration, slot-car handling, and Deutsche Jet driving on the highways and back roads, reserve your comment. Your pulse will leap the first time you launch this vehicle!
The recent Car & Driver instrumentation testing of the 718 Cayman S PDK resulted in a 3.6 second 0-60 mph acceleration. This beast rockets to 180 miles per hour, and it’s designed to handle the speed. The new 718 Cayman S PDK is QUICKER than the new Corvette.
All Porsche’s will pop at times–they are Porsches. And as for the 718 Cayman S PDK, it’s sound is sharp, aggressive, and unapologetic. It’s what the new 718 Cayman S sounds like. You can really get a feel for the new jet here as it runs the second fastest lap run by a 4-cylinder at Nordschleife.

I traded a Lexus RCF TVD carbon in when I purchased the Porsche. While the RCF has a world-class V8 engine, the new 718 Cayman S puts that car to shame. It is a true supercar to be had with all of the “sport” gear, larger engine, lowered chassis, variable turbo geometry from the 911 turbo, 911 turbo 10% plus steering, 20′ turbo wheels, etc. for $100,000 US.
If you do not like awesome handling and exceptional performance, this is not the car for you. );-) Seriously, the car is remarkable!
