Documentary About Brumos Racing, Hurley Haywood and Peter Gregg Needs Your Support

In the early ’70’s the dynamic duo of Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood were a nearly unstoppable force in the world of sports car racing. Their achievements are the reason the red-white-and-blue livery of Brumos is now a global icon. For nearly a decade the two won almost every race they entered and seemed to be living a life most could only dream about. Then, in 1980, tragedy struck. At just 40-years old Peter Gregg took his own life.

Why would a young man, in the prime of life and career, commit suicide? Hurley Haywood & Peter Gregg: The Untold Story is a documentary that hopes to provide a new perspective on Haywood and Gregg’s meteoric rise to fame and attempt to find meaning in the untimely death of Peter.

Filmmaker Derek Dodge says that “This documentary feature film will give a never-before-seen look at the private lives of legendary drivers Hurley Haywood and Peter Gregg.” For the past two years Dodge, and a small group of enthusiasts and volunteers, have traveled the country filming and gathering materials for the project. Along the way they’ve had unprecedented access and cooperation from the key players including Hurley Haywood, Simon Gregg, Don Leatherwood, Bill Warner, and many others.

How You Can Help

While most of the film is shot, there are some missing pieces. Dodge needs to continue traveling to finish his interviews and only then will he start the long and complicated process of post production. In order to complete the film Dodge is looking to raise $35,000 to finish shooting interviews, continue editing, and have a rough cut of the film finished by the summer with a hopeful release date of early 2017.

I for one would like to see this film completed and have already personally backed it. It’s obviously a labor of love and from what little we’ve seen of it so far the production values and content are top notch. If you’re not familiar with Kickstarter, it’s a crowd funding site where those that help fund a project like this receive something in return. In this instance, Dodge is offering backers everything from the ability to preview the film to private video chats with Hurley and even a chance to be included in the film itself. So far the project has nearly $9,000 in backing but needs another $26,000 to go forward. Do yourself a favor and check out the Kickstarter page for more information, figure out what type of perk you want for your contribution, and make a pledge. Every dollar counts!
