We’re Going Behind the Scenes of Porsche’s Latest Video Shoot

Last week an invitation arrived asking if we were interested in joining the Porsche “family” at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham to celebrate the culmination of a 10-day, 6 stop “Spirited Escape” road trip with the new Porsche Boxster in conjunction with Men’s Journal and hosted by Dhani Jones. We didn’t hesitate to accept.

The event kicked off this evening with a dinner on the 5th floor of the Barber Motorsports Museum. Guests included the likes of Jeff Zwart, Hurley Haywood, a wide variety of Porsche executives, select journalists and certain Porsche “family” members (more on them in a later post) who were kind enough to donate various historic Porsches for the event.

Dhani Jones listens as Porsche’s Scott Baker kicks off the night

After a brief introduction from Porsche’s Scott Baker, Dhani Jones took the stage to recap his travels over the last 10 days. While Dhani’s not unfamiliar with our favorite brand, this was his first real immersion into the world of Porsche. From filming the Boxster in Grand Central Station to driving the Tail of the Dragon with famed automotive journalist Ezra Dyer, Dhani recounted his travels. He seemed genuinely awed by his experiences and grateful to be part of the Porsche “family”.

After the speeches we get down to drinking and eating and learned what transpired today prior to our arrival. You see, Porsche was here at Barber, all day, filming the new Boxster with some of its older, perhaps less-refined cousins (such as two different 550’s, a 904 and a Carrera GT). We’re told the weather was a bit sketchy toward the end of today’s production. Apparently, as filming wrapped for the day, there were funnel clouds spotted. It wasn’t until everyone was safely moved into a more secure area that someone opined that maybe the Porsches should be the ones in the safe place. Ya think?

More to Follow

Tomorrow, we get the chance to watch more filming ourselves and possibly even participate. There have been hints of rides in the 550s and 904s and talk of more track time in the new Boxster and perhaps even the Carerra GT.

What all this filming and video will become is not yet known. It might end up on Porsche’s Youtube channel or it could become footage for a TV commercial (like the Panamera commercial from a couple years ago). Whatever it is, it should be epic and we’ll be taking pictures and doing our best to convey the experience to you in a few short words here on PorschePurist our Facebook page and via Twitter. Stay tuned.
